TEN FAMILIAR HYMNS IN NEW SETTINGS

OLDEN, OLIVER
HESCHKE, RICHARD

This collection was composed by Richard Heschke as a resource to promote and encourage freshness and vitality in the hymnic life of the average congregation. Each of the ten settings includes a prelude, an intonation, and one or more hymn harmonizations. The preludes, in the tradition of the vorspiel, include the entire hymn or hymnic refrain in'singing tempo' and present a seamless introduction to the hymn itself. Intonations include a segment of the hymn melody, also in'singing tempo,' and are meant to be used as an introduction to very familiar hymns or as a call to the resumption of a hymn that has been divided in its presentation. The harmonizations offer an alternative to standard hymnal settings and are intended to provide musical variety when combined with them. In some cases, at the discretion of the musician, they can also be used as an alternative to the hymnal setting. Occasion: Baptism, Beginning of Service, Canticle, Christmas, Church, Easter, Epiphany, Justification, Mission and Witness, Praise and Adoration, Redeemer, Society.
